Siding in West & North Guelph

Replacing the original aluminum across Guelph's post-war and 1960s-70s west and north end, and dealing with the soffit and fascia behind it.

Willow West, Parkwood Gardens, Onward Willow, West Willow Woods, Waverley, Riverside Park and the streets off Victoria Road North are the real siding replacement market in this city. Bungalows, backsplits and two-storeys from the 1950s through the 1980s, and a large share of them still wearing their original aluminum. That aluminum has lasted a long time, which is worth saying, and what it is doing now is the ordinary end of its life. The finish has chalked, so your hand comes off the wall grey. The colour has gone flat and uneven, worst on the south and west elevations that take the most sun. And it is dented wherever a ladder, a ball, a snowblower or a car door has touched it, because aluminum dents and keeps the dent. Two things behind the panels matter more than the panels themselves. The first is what is in the wall: a lot of these cavities have little insulation and nothing continuous outside the studs, which is why re-siding here is one of the genuine opportunities to add an insulated panel or a foam layer while the wall is open and the incremental labour is small. On the cold windward walls it makes a real difference to how the house feels in February. The second is the overhang. On houses of this era the soffit and fascia are the same age and the same condition as the siding, the overhangs are often shallow, the fascia board has taken water at the low corners, and the soffit has been cut into and patched over forty years. That gets dealt with at the same time, because new siding under a beaten-up soffit is the thing people tell us they regret about their last siding job. One common find worth knowing about: on these shallow overhangs with low roof pitches, the soffit vents are frequently blocked from the attic side by insulation pushed out to the edge. We can see it when the soffit is off and we will point it out. Fixing the attic side is a different trade's work and not something we sell.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge more to work outside the city?

Not inside Guelph. For Rockwood, Fergus, Elora, Puslinch, Aberfoyle, Ariss and the rest of the county, travel is built into the quote up front rather than added afterwards, so the number you agree to is the number. Rural jobs are often quoted with the outbuildings included because the mobilisation is already paid for.

Can you do one wall instead of the whole house?

Yes, and plenty of jobs here are exactly that — a wind-damaged elevation, a sun-beaten west wall, a gable end, or the rear addition on an older house. The honest caution is matching: an existing colour that has been on the wall for fifteen years will not match a new panel of the same name, so a single wall is straightforward where it stands alone and harder where it meets an untouched wall at a corner in full view.
